Intesi Group contributes to the first European trial of the EU Digital Identity Wallet in tourism

Intesi Group, a leading Italian Qualified Trust Service Provider (QTSP), proudly announces the release of PhotoID as Electronic Attestation of Attributes (EAA) according to eIDAS regulation, developed as part of the first European pilot of the EU Digital Identity Wallet in the tourism sector.

The pilot, led by SICPA in collaboration with Visit Benidorm, demonstrated the transformative potential of the European Digital Identity Wallet: reducing hotel check-in times from an average of 15 minutes to just two minutes per guest, saving up to 10 hours daily in a 200-room hotel during peak season.

As cyber‑attacks targeting stolen identity documents rise, the use of the EUDI Wallet in tourism offers a decisive layer of protection for both industry actors and travelers. By replacing paper or photocopied IDs with secure, privacy‑preserving digital verification, hotels and tour operators can confirm guests’ identities without collecting or storing sensitive documents — reducing fraud, simplifying check‑in and ensuring compliance with data‑protection and identity regulations. This first deployment in the tourism sector demonstrates how trusted digital identity can safeguard citizens while streamlining operations across the travel ecosystem. The implementation was developed as part of the EU Digital Identity Wallet Consortium (EWC) co-funded by the European Commission, where Intesi Group contributed with its expertise in eIDAS and trusted digital identity services. With PhotoID as EAAs, personal identity data can be securely verified and shared in compliance with the new European framework, ensuring a privacy-first, consent-based process for both citizens and service providers.

The implementation of the European Digital Identity Wallet in hospitality proves how digital trust services can deliver real, measurable benefits: less paperwork, faster operations, and a better guest experience.” said Daniele Ribaudo – Intesi Group Product Owner. “We are proud to bring our technology and expertise to groundbreaking achievements”.

Our contribution to this project confirms Intesi Group’s commitment to building the European Digital Identity Wallet ecosystem,” added Viky Manaila – Intesi Group Trsut Services Director. “PhotoID as a verifiable credential is a digital version of a photo identity (like a passport) that you hold in your secure EUDI wallet and can present to others in a way that proves it is genuine. It can be used for hotel check-in, car rental, tour bookings, age-restricted access – in short, anywhere a trusted photo ID is required”.

Alongside SICPA and Intesi Group, the pilot was made possible through the collaboration of HOSBEC, Visit Benidorm, Softme.es, Apartamentos Michelangelo, Incert, iGrant, and ValidatedID. This pilot represents the first step toward the large-scale rollout of the European Digital Identity Wallet by December 2026, paving the way for seamless, secure, and smarter travel across Europe.
